Semi formal attire for men and women

In this guide

Semi formal is the dress code that makes people reread the invitation. The word formal suggests a tuxedo or a gown, the word semi suggests something less, and nobody tells you how much less. So you end up weighing a suit against a blazer, or a floor length dress against a knee length one, with no idea which way the room will lean. The short answer is that semi formal attire sits in the dressed up middle: a suit for men, a cocktail dress or its equivalent for women, and no black tie.

What changes the details is the time of day, the season and the venue. This guide explains how semi formal compares with the codes on either side, then works through outfits for men and for women, the difference between a daytime and an evening event, and the particular considerations of a semi formal wedding. Everything here describes garments, not who wears them, so choose from either section freely.

What semi formal attire means

The Emily Post Institute describes semi formal as more formal than what you would wear to the office and a little less formal than a formal event. Its lists are a dark business suit with a dress shirt, tie and leather shoes for men, and a short afternoon or cocktail dress, a little black dress or dressy separates for women. Zola's wedding guides say the same thing from the other direction, noting that cocktail attire is often simply called semi formal. So if you own a cocktail outfit, you own a semi formal outfit.

On the usual ladder of dress codes, which runs casual, smart casual, business casual, dressy casual, cocktail or semi formal, black tie optional, black tie and white tie, semi formal shares the middle rung with cocktail. Some wedding planners draw a fine line between the two, placing cocktail a small step dressier, but guests who dress for either will look right at both. More useful is knowing what semi formal excludes. A tuxedo or a formal ball gown overshoots it, and jeans, sneakers, polos and sundresses in casual cotton fall short. Our guides to cocktail attire for men and cocktail attire for women go deeper into suits, dresses, fabrics and shoes for this level.

Daytime versus evening

Time is the biggest variable in semi formal attire. The Emily Post Institute advises erring on the side of formality once an event begins after 6 pm, and its wedding guidance gives separate daytime and evening suggestions for the semi formal level, with evening generally the dressier of the two. An evening event pulls you toward dark suits, white shirts, silk ties, richer fabrics such as satin and velvet, and deeper colors. A lunchtime or afternoon event lets you move toward lighter suits, softer ties, prints, pastels and airy fabrics.

The venue works in the same direction. A hotel, a formal restaurant or a house of worship in the evening sits at the dressy end of semi formal; a garden, a vineyard, a boat or a beach in daylight sits at the relaxed end. Season matters too. A July afternoon in Georgia and a December evening in Minneapolis can share a dress code and still call for completely different fabrics, so let the weather decide the weight and the time of day decide the color.

Semi formal attire for men

Start with a suit. For evening events, navy, charcoal and dark gray are the most useful, worn with a white or pale blue shirt, a silk tie and black or dark brown leather shoes. For daytime and summer, Zola's guide suggests lighter suits such as light blue or khaki, and mid gray and tan work well too, with brown shoes. Worsted wool works most of the year; tropical wool, linen blends and cotton help in heat. Fit carries the outfit, so check shoulders, sleeve length and trouser hem against our guide to how a suit should fit.

Wear the tie unless the host says otherwise. Zola recommends dressing up rather than down at this level, and a tie is the one piece you can take off after the ceremony or once the room relaxes. A blazer with contrasting dress trousers can work at a relaxed daytime event, but a matching suit is safer whenever you are unsure. Leave the tuxedo at home; its satin lapels belong to black tie, and our guide to suits versus tuxedos explains the difference if you are not sure which one you own.

Semi formal attire for women

The classic semi formal dress is a cocktail dress at knee or midi length in a fabric with some polish: crepe, silk, satin, chiffon, lace or a fine knit. Zola also lists a dressy jumpsuit, a nice suit, and a dressy skirt with a top, and all of them are correct as long as every piece is at the same level of dress. Midi lengths are especially useful because they look right both in the afternoon and at night. Floor length gowns usually overshoot semi formal, though a light, flowing maxi can suit a daytime garden or beach event.

For an evening event, choose deeper colors, richer fabrics and a little shine in shoes or jewelry. For daytime, prints, pastels and lighter fabrics fit better. Shoes can be heels, block heels, dressy flats or elegant sandals; choose flats or wedges for grass and sand, where thin heels sink. Carry a small bag and bring a wrap or jacket for air conditioned rooms, cool evenings and ceremonies that expect covered shoulders.

Semi formal wedding attire

Semi formal appears on a great many American wedding invitations, and the outfits above apply directly. Guests add a few considerations. Check the wedding website before anything else, since couples often explain what they mean, mention the venue surface, or ask guests to avoid certain colors. Leave white, ivory and anything that could read as bridal to the couple, which Zola and most American wedding guides advise. If the ceremony is in a house of worship, the Emily Post Institute suggests finding out whether covered shoulders or head coverings are expected.

Outdoor weddings need practical adjustments. Men may want loafers or derbies with some grip on grass, and a jacket in a breathable fabric for an afternoon in the sun; take your cue from the couple or the hosts before removing it. Women may want block heels, wedges or flats and a layer for the evening. If the invitation reads black tie optional rather than semi formal, the range moves up a step, as our guide to black tie optional explains, and our guide to what to wear to a wedding covers every other code a couple might choose.

Semi formal at parties, dances and work events

Outside weddings, semi formal appears on company holiday parties, charity dinners, school dances and milestone birthdays. The same outfits work, adjusted for the crowd. At a work holiday party, a dark suit with a festive tie, or a cocktail dress or velvet trousers with a silk top, is right, while anything very short or very revealing tends to sit awkwardly with colleagues. At a charity dinner or gala labeled semi formal, lean toward the evening end of the range; our guide on what to wear to a gala covers the dressier versions of that evening.

For a school semi formal dance, a suit or a blazer with dress trousers and a tie, or a knee length or midi dress, jumpsuit or dressy separates, fits the expectation, and schools often publish their own rules about length and straps, so read those first. If the event instead says dressy casual, the level drops a step, with jackets optional and ties rarely needed; our guide to dressy casual describes it.

Common mistakes

  • Reading semi as casual

Semi formal is still formal enough for a suit and a cocktail dress. Chinos with a polo or a casual cotton sundress fall below it, even at an outdoor event.

  • Overshooting into black tie

A tuxedo or a structured floor length gown signals black tie and can look out of place among suits and knee length dresses. Choose your best suit or cocktail dress instead.

  • Ignoring the hour

The same dress code covers a noon garden party and a 7 pm hotel reception. Let the start time decide your color and fabric, and the forecast decide your layers and shoes.

Questions people ask

Is semi formal the same as cocktail attire?

For most hosts, yes. The Emily Post Institute lists the cocktail dress as semi formal attire, and Zola notes that cocktail attire is often called semi formal. Some planners treat cocktail as a small step dressier, but the same suit or cocktail dress works for both.

Do men have to wear a tie for semi formal?

A tie is expected unless the host says otherwise, especially in the evening. It is also the easiest thing to remove once you see the room. At a daytime outdoor event that is explicitly relaxed, an open collar with a suit can be fine.

Can I wear a long dress to a semi formal event?

A light, flowing maxi in a soft fabric can work at a daytime or outdoor semi formal event. A structured evening gown usually reads as black tie. When in doubt, a midi length is the safest choice.

Can I wear jeans to a semi formal event?

No. Jeans fall below semi formal even when they are dark and worn with a blazer. Zola's guide to semi formal attire for men rules out denim, and the same applies to women's outfits.

What should you avoid at a semi formal event?

Leave out anything casual: jeans, shorts, T shirts, polos, sneakers, flip flops and casual cotton sundresses. At the other end, skip the tuxedo and the structured ball gown, which belong to black tie. At a wedding, also avoid white and ivory, and keep very short or very revealing pieces for another occasion.

What should an older woman wear to a semi formal wedding?

The dress code does not change with age, so the same range applies: a knee or midi length dress, a dressy jumpsuit or an elegant trouser suit. Many women prefer sleeves or a matching jacket, a fabric with some drape such as crepe or chiffon, and a block heel or dressy flat they can stand in for hours. Choose what you feel at ease in; comfort and polish matter more than any rule about age.
