Boho meaning and where the style came from
Boho is short for bohemian. The word first described artists and writers in 19th century Paris who lived outside conventional society, often poor by choice and devoted to their work. French speakers called them bohémiens through a confused association with the Romani people, who were wrongly thought to come from Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. Loose, artistic dress became part of that image, and the Pre Raphaelite circle in Victorian England added flowing, uncorseted gowns.
The clothes most people now call boho come from the hippie years of the late 1960s and 1970s: peasant blouses, long printed skirts, embroidered tunics, fringe, suede and craft techniques from around the world. The name boho chic took hold in the early 2000s, with Kate Moss and Sienna Miller as its public faces and Miller's 2004 Glastonbury festival look as a turning point. The style came back again after Chemena Kamali's first collection for Chloé in February 2024, which leaned on the house's 1970s archive with fringe, capes, flared trousers and ruffles.
Boho vs hippie: what is the difference?
Hippie fashion was part of a counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s, and its clothes carried a message: rejection of formal dress, handmade and secondhand clothing, tie dye, peace symbols and very long hair. Prints lean toward florals, paisley and patchwork, often in earthy colors such as rust, ochre, olive, cream, brown and dusty rose. Choose a midi or maxi dress in a light, flowing fabric with some structure at the waist, in a floral print or a soft solid color. Avoid anything white, cream or very pale that might read as bridal, and skip very sheer lace unless it is fully lined.
Dress it up with delicate jewelry, block heels or dressy flat sandals, and a small clutch instead of a slouchy bag. Boho is one of the most flexible styles for women over 50 or 60, because it values comfort and texture over tight fits. Choose fabrics with enough weight to drape rather than cling, and pick one statement at a time, such as a strong necklace, an embroidered jacket or a printed scarf.
What tends to look dated at any age is the full 2000s formula all at once: tiered skirt, fringe, a floppy hat, piles of jewelry and boots together. Loose from head to toe

Paisley, floral and patchwork together can look chaotic. Keep one print per outfit, or two only if they share a color, and let solids do the rest.

Boho comes and goes as a runway trend, and it had a strong revival after Chloé's fall 2024 collection.
