Bing Crosby, then one of the most famous entertainers in North America, arrived at the Hotel Vancouver after a hunting trip dressed in a denim jacket and jeans, and the desk clerk reportedly refused him a room because he looked like a vagrant. According to the account shared by Levi Strauss and Co., the company heard the story and made Crosby a tailored denim tuxedo jacket, cut from the same denim as its 501 jeans, with a corsage of red tabs and a leather patch inside that addressed a notice to all hotel men. Levi's called it the Canadian tuxedo, and Crosby wore it while promoting his film Here Comes the Groom. The details come from later retellings, so treat the dialogue as legend rather than record.
The phrase stuck as a friendly joke about casual dress in Canada, and it is generally used with affection rather than as an insult.
