Measure your inseam from pants that fit or on your body, see how inseam differs from outseam, and choose the right length for jeans, dress pants, shorts and bikes.

## Quick answer

> To measure inseam, lay a pair of pants that fit you well flat, fold the top leg back and measure along the inside seam from the crotch seam to the bottom of the hem. On your body, measure from the top of the inner thigh down to where you want the hem to end, wearing the shoes you plan to wear. Inseam is not outseam, which starts at the waistband.

A jeans label reads 32 by 30, or a trouser page asks you to choose a length in inches, and both assume you already know your inseam. Knowing how to measure inseam solves that in a few minutes, and the most reliable method needs nothing more than a pair of pants you already like and a tape measure.

The number is only useful if you measure the same thing the brand does, and if you think about the shoes and the fabric the pants will meet. This guide covers both ways of measuring, what to do with the result, and the separate measurement cyclists mean when they say inseam.

## What inseam means, and how it differs from outseam

The inseam is the length of the seam that runs down the inside of the leg, from the crotch, where the leg seams meet, to the bottom edge of the hem. It tells you how far below the crotch the pants reach. The outseam runs down the outside of the leg from the top of the waistband to the hem, so it is always several inches longer and it changes with the rise. Two pairs with the same inseam can have very different outseams if one sits at the natural waist and the other on the hips.

Men's jeans and trousers in the United States are usually labeled waist first, then inseam, so a 32 by 30 means a 32 inch waist and a 30 inch inseam. Women's pants more often come in numbered sizes with a choice of short, regular and long lengths, or in petite and tall ranges, and the inseam for each appears in the brand's size guide. Either way, the inseam is the number to compare, because it is the one measurement that is taken the same way almost everywhere.

## How to measure inseam on pants that fit

This is the more reliable of the two methods, and the one Levi's describes for jeans, because a finished garment does not fidget the way a body does. Pick a pair that is the length you want, in a similar cut and with the shoes you usually wear with them in mind.

1. **Lay the pants flat.** Put them on a table or hard floor, zipped and buttoned, and smooth out the wrinkles with your hands. A crumpled leg measures short.
2. **Fold the top leg back.** Fold one leg up and over toward the waistband so the inside seam of the other leg lies flat and fully exposed, from the crotch to the hem.
3. **Find the crotch point.** Locate the spot where the leg seams meet at the crotch. Start the tape exactly there, not on the fabric beside it.
4. **Measure to the hem.** Run the tape straight along the inside seam to the bottom edge of the hem. If the pants are cuffed or rolled, measure to the fold at the bottom, since that is where the finished length ends. Write down the number in inches, then check the other leg.

## How to measure inseam on your body

If you have no pants that fit, measure on yourself, ideally with a helper. Wear the shoes you intend to wear with the new pants, or stand barefoot if you are measuring for something you will wear with flat sneakers. Stand straight with your feet slightly apart and your weight even.

Levi's describes the body inseam as the distance from the top of your inner thigh down to the bottom of your ankle. Your helper holds the end of the tape high in the crotch and runs it straight down the inside of the leg to where you want the hem to finish. If you are alone, the Levi's secondhand guide suggests the reverse: tape the end of the tape measure to the inside of your ankle at the hem point, then run it up the inside of your leg to the crotch, pinch it there and read the number. Either way, the tape should follow the leg, not pull tight across it.

A body measurement usually comes out a little different from a garment measurement, because the crotch seam of most pants hangs slightly below your body and the tape's end in the crotch is hard to place exactly. Treat the body number as a guide for choosing among the lengths a brand offers, and trust a pair that already fits when you have one. The same care with a level, relaxed tape applies to [your other body measurements](https://snaza.app/journal/how-to-measure-yourself-for-clothes/).

## Turn the number into the right length

Your inseam depends on how you like pants to meet your shoes. A trouser that just grazes the top of the shoe needs a shorter inseam than one that rests on it with a soft fold, and a boot raises the point where the hem lands. Our guide to [how long dress pants should be](https://snaza.app/journal/how-long-should-dress-pants-be/) explains the choices from no break to a full break, and they apply to chinos as well as suits.

Fabric matters too. Levi's shrink to fit jeans are made of raw cotton that is meant to shrink when soaked, so their labeled length is a before number. Ordinary cotton can also lose a little length in a hot wash or dryer, which is one reason to follow our advice on [washing jeans](https://snaza.app/journal/how-to-wash-jeans/) if you want them to keep their length. Levi's secondhand guide adds that older jeans have often shrunk over the years and may no longer match the number on the tag.

When in doubt, choose the longer option. As Levi's points out, jeans can always be shortened but never made longer, and a little extra length can be worn [cuffed or rolled](https://snaza.app/journal/how-to-cuff-jeans/) or taken up, either by a tailor or at home with our guide to [hemming pants](https://snaza.app/journal/how-to-hem-pants/). Wide leg pants are the exception worth planning for, because their hem is meant to fall close to the floor over a particular heel height, so settle on the shoes first; our guide on [shoes for wide leg jeans](https://snaza.app/journal/what-shoes-to-wear-with-wide-leg-jeans/) can help.

## Measuring inseam for men and women

The method is the same for everyone: crotch point to hem, measured along the inside of the leg. What differs is how brands present the result. Men's pants often let you pick an exact inseam in inches, while women's pants usually offer two or three length versions, each with a listed inseam that you match against your measurement. Rise is where women's patterns vary most, from low to high, and a high rise changes where the waist sits but not the inseam. For where a women's hem should land with flats, heels and cropped styles, see our guide to [how long women's pants should be](https://snaza.app/journal/how-long-should-womens-pants-be/).

People often try to predict inseam from height, and Levi's does suggest height ranges for its lengths. Height is only a rough proxy, though, because legs and torsos vary independently; two people of the same height can need noticeably different inseams. If a chart gives you a length for your height, confirm it with a measurement before you have anything hemmed.

**Worth remembering**

1. Measuring a pair that already fits is more reliable than measuring your body.
2. Measure in the shoes you will wear, because a boot raises the point where the hem lands.
3. When in doubt choose the longer length; jeans can be shortened but never made longer.
4. Height charts are only a rough guide, since two people of the same height can need different inseams.

## How to measure inseam on shorts

Shorts are measured the same way as pants, from the crotch seam to the bottom of the hem along the inside of the leg. The common labels of 5, 7 and 9 inches describe that distance, and a smaller number shows more thigh. Where each one lands on you depends on the length of your thighs and on the rise of the shorts, so the most dependable approach is to measure a pair whose length you already like and look for the nearest listed inseam. If you are between two, the longer one can be rolled once, while the shorter one cannot be lengthened.

## How to measure inseam for a bike

Cyclists use inseam to mean something different: your leg length from the floor to your crotch, which bike makers use for frame size and standover clearance. It is longer than your pants inseam and should not be swapped with it.

To take it, stand barefoot with your back against a wall and your feet about shoulder width apart. Slide a hardcover book between your legs, spine up, and raise it firmly until it presses into your crotch roughly as a saddle would, keeping it level against the wall. Mark the wall at the top of the spine, step away and measure from the floor to the mark. Repeat a few times and average the results, then read the bike maker's own frame chart.

**Three measurements that sound alike**

| Measurement | From | To |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pants or shorts inseam | Crotch point where the leg seams meet | Bottom edge of the hem |
| Outseam | Top of the waistband | Hem, several inches longer and changes with rise |
| Bike inseam | Floor, standing barefoot | Crotch, measured with a book pressed up like a saddle |

## Common mistakes

- **Measuring from the waistband.** Starting at the top of the waist gives you the outseam, several inches longer than the inseam. Always start at the crotch point.
- **Measuring pants you do not like the length of.** A pair that pools over your shoes or flashes your ankles will give you the wrong number accurately. Measure the pair that looks right, or add or subtract the difference you want.
- **Measuring in the wrong shoes.** Flat sneakers and heeled boots put the hem in different places. Measure with the footwear you will actually wear, especially for wide leg and flared pants.

## Questions people ask

### Does the inseam include the waistband?

No. The inseam starts at the crotch point and ends at the hem. The measurement that includes the waistband is the outseam, which runs down the outside of the leg.

### How do I measure my inseam by myself?

The easiest way is to measure a pair of pants that already fits, which needs no helper at all. On your body, tape the end of the tape measure to the inside of your ankle where you want the hem, then run it up the inside of your leg to the crotch, pinch the tape at that point and read the number.

### Can a tailor make pants longer?

Only if there is spare fabric folded inside the hem. Dress trousers are often made with some extra for this purpose, while most jeans have a narrow hem with little or nothing to let down. That is why it is safer to buy a little long and have the pants shortened.

### Is a 30 inch inseam short?

It depends on who is wearing it. Levi's standard men's jeans commonly come in 30, 32 and 34 inch inseams, so 30 is the shorter of the usual men's lengths, while its women's jeans commonly run 28, 30 and 32, where 30 sits in the middle. Height alone will not tell you whether 30 is right for you, because leg length varies between people of the same height, so measure a pair that fits before choosing.

### Should I measure inseam for jeans differently from dress pants?

The measurement is the same, but the target differs. Jeans are often worn slightly shorter or cuffed and may shrink a little in the wash, while dress pants are chosen to meet the shoe with a specific break. Measure a pair of the same kind you already wear if you can.
